Deftones — Hole in the Earth

Deftones -- Hole in the Earth

Thanks to Andrew for turning me on to this new single from Deftones. (Feels like there should be a “The” there…) “Hole in the Earth” has a more free, loose sound than some of their earlier work, but somehow at the same time it sounds more refined. I’m sure long-time Deftones fans will dig it. The big layered sound, Chino Moreno’s breathy vocals, and the usual Deftones vibe of melancholy are all in there. But that “Hole” groove feels bigger, and attracts. I’m guessing it will attract a lot of new fans.

The full album, Saturday Night Wrist, comes out October, 31.

Gorillaz — G Sides

Gorillaz -- G Sides

  • Artist: Gorillaz
  • Title: G Sides
  • Year: 2002
  • Format: CD
  • Rating (1-10): 10
  • Owner: Mars
  • Acquired: July 2006 – with his allowance from the local Barnes and Noble
  • Keeper: Yes

This is the first CD I bought with my own money. It was a lot of money but the Gorillaz are my favorite band and I didn’t wanna wait another minute to listen to it. I play it so much that my parents get bored of hearing it.

If you’re looking for a good beat this is the album for you. My favorite songs are “The Sounder”, which is mostly rap, and “Faust”, a slower song with good female and male vocals at the end. I also like “Ghost Train”, which has a strong beat.

I think the Gorillaz are the best band ever.

Pere Ubu — Terminal Tower – An Archival Collection

Pere Ubu -- Terminal Tower - An Archival Collection

  • Artist: Pere Ubu
  • Title: Terminal Tower – An Archival Collection
  • Year: 1985
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 7
  • Owner: Tracy
  • Acquired: 1985 – When I worked at Mother’s Records in Hampton, VA.

I’m not cool enough, or maybe just not old enough, to have bought Pere Ubu’s early records when they came out, but I did get “Terminal Tower – An Archival Collection” when I was 19 or so. They make some pretty interesting music that’s not easy to describe, but someone at Wikipedia did a good job with this article about the band.

I saw them live at the Town & Country Club in London way back in 1987, or maybe ’86. The opening acts were Ut, followed by The Mekons. For the most part, it seemed like a Mekons crowd. That said, Pere Ubu put on a great, but abbreviated show that most people seemed to enjoy.

Unfortunately, some folks expressed their gratitude by throwing crap on the stage or even at the musicians. At one point Pere Ubu singer David Thomas made it clear that if there was any further silliness that they would walk off the stage. Sure enough, some bonehead had to throw something and Mr. Thomas immediately walked off in a huff. I can’t say I blame him. The rest of the band tried to carry on for a bit but it was clear he wasn’t coming back. The other band members eventually walked off too, looking rather frustrated. I’m not sure if Thomas, the crowd, or both were the source of that frustration.

Dalis Car — The Judgement Is The Mirror

Dalis Car -- The Judgement Is The Mirror

  • Artist: Dalis Car
  • Title: The Judgement Is The Mirror
  • Year: 1984
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 6
  • Owner: Mary
  • Acquired: 1986 ? – When she worked at Plan 9 Records in Richmond, VA.
  • Keeper: Yes

Peter Murphy (Bauhaus) and Mick Karn (Japan) teamed up to form Dalis Car in 1984. No, I didn’t forget the apostrophe. There’s no instance of “Dalis” with an apostrophe anywhere on this record. “The Judgement Is The Mirror” is the name of this three song 12 inch. They also put out on full-length album. It’s interesting music, but that fretless bass just gets on my nerves.

This article about Dalis Car at Wikipedia has more info and the apostrophe that’s missing.

Faith No More — Introduce Yourself

Faith No More -- Introduce Yourself

  • Artist: Faith No More
  • Title: Introduce Yourself
  • Year: 1987
  • Format: Vinyl 12 in.
  • Rating (1-10): 7
  • Owner: Tracy / Mary
  • Acquired: 1987 – We each got copies from the record stores where we “worked.”
  • Keeper: Yes

I definitely like “Introduce Yourself” better than their first record “We Care a Lot.” The title track from “We Care a Lot” appears on both records, and I’m not sure why. Wikipedia has a little info about it. I love that song, but I also love the title track of “Introduce Yourself.” In general this record seems more rocked out and the synth less prominent. “Also available on cassette.”
